I have tried different menu items each of the three times I have been there including the rib platter last night. The choices have continued to get better. The first entree I tried, the two meat sandwich with turkey and sausage, was good. I wasn't too impressed with the sweet potato fries. The second visit I chose the burnt ends, not the best in the area, but above average. The spicy fries were a good choice and my 5-year-old ate most of his bbq spaghetti. The slaw isn't overly impressive, maybe cut too large for my taste and too runny. I think the Mac and cheese needs a touch of salt but is plenty cheesy. One thing I was told before my initial visit was that the owner was a character, and during the first visit that held true. He seemed like a nice guy, albeit ornery, and went out of his way to accommodate a vegan in our group. Will definitely be back soon.

Ok, so this place is only about 5 minutes from my house so I got takeout. I ordered the 2 meat combo and chose the brisket, burnt ends and the home style Mac n cheese. I also added a rib. The burnt ends had a delicious flavor...nice and smokey with a little spice. They weren't as tender as I'd have liked but still great. The brisket worried me as it was sliced a little thin and resembled roast beef. The thinness was perfect though for soaking in the sauce. The brisket did however taste very heated up. Good but not great. The home style Mac and cheese was anything but. It was bland. Nearly flavorless and clearly microwaved. The rib was delicious, again not fall off the bone but a good smokey bite and big too boot. My suggestion?? Eat here. It's good food. It's decent priced. But steer clear of the Mac and cheese and go for some nice slaw or beans instead.

Really well-run establishment. Great quality meat, prepared on site. The owner gave me a tour of the kitchen and I got to see for myself how clean it is. They were cutting fresh heads of cabbage for cole slaw, so I know they make things from scratch. I will return again. I would chose this barbecue place over many others in the area. it's real treat!

I have not received this kind of great service from anywhere in a long time. I called over the phone as I would be driving by the area and needed to pick up BBQ for 6 co-workers. The owner was very helpful in his recommendations and offered suggestions to keep my cost low. Once there he just bent over backwards to make everything perfect. He took a lot of pride in his food and customer service. 6 people agreed the food was quite tasty. Sauce was not over bearing and he didn't drown the sandwiches in it like so many do. Sides were great as well. I will most definitely go back whenever I'm in the area and I highly recommend it for anyone looking for reasonably priced great BBQ. Another great tidbit: he cut the oblong sandwiches in half and I ordered a few extra cause my co-workers are all hard working men with big appetites. Because of culturing them in halves people took just a half for more food and this left them with enough leftovers for a light lunch for my 3 outside workers on Monday. Why go donate your paycheck to big business? In the mood for BBQ ? Eat at Smokey's and you will be pleased plus your helping a small local business!

I don't know how this place gets so many good reviews. Maybe we just ate there on a bad night but this was HORRIBLE BBQ... Everything tasted old and was dried out. We ordered 1/2 chicken , burnt ends and pulled pork, onion rings, beans and mac and cheese. The chicken and burnt ends were so dry I fed it to the cat. The 1/2 chicken was TINY... don't know if it might have been a cornish hen or a quail instead. The other meat portions wouldn't have satisfied a 2 year old.The pulled pork was just ok but has kind of a chemical taste to it. Really... 6 small onion rings for $3.59 ...I will say the mac and cheese was good... should have just ordered a quart of that. I hope this was just a bad night but I wont be wasting my time here again.

Absolutely wonderful BBQ and great prices. My wife and I both ordered the BLVD sandwich which has pulled pork on toasted bun topped with smoked Havarti Cheese, 2 onion rings and their signature BLVD sauce. It was delicious! The sandwich is not huge but it is still very filling and at $6.99 a very good deal. I wish that they offered a bigger version of this sandwich. Bigger bun, more meat, for $9.99?!?!?!? The fries were excellent and I loved their hot bbq sauce. The owner is very friendly and personable. Great food, good prices, nice clean restaurant. I'm a fan and will definitely be returning.

Based on the other Yelp reviews, I decided to give this place a try....and was not disappointed! The sausage & burnt ends were really good, and so were the spicy fries. The prices are reasonable & I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in this area.

Delicious thin-sliced turkey and brisket, good thick smokey sauce. Solid slaw and potato salad. Mac and cheese and breaded mushrooms, A-plus.

Great experience. The ownership believes in their food for good reason - it was delicious, reasonably priced, and great portions. Get the "burnt ends"

  • Mary S.

RIBS! All I can say is these are big, juicy, tender and full of flavorful meat. I almost had to pull over on the way home because the smell was driving me crazy. Good service too - the people working were very nice. This was our second time there. The first time, we had sandwiches and burnt ends. Didn't care as much for the sandwiches as I like the meat sliced thicker but it still had good flavor. We will go back often if for nothing other than the ribs.

Smokeys has great burnt ends. The spicy fries are fantastic. This place is now on my top 5 of BBQ in KC, and that is saying something!

Bought a coupon off of deal saver I believe it was, and went to this place with out much expectations. We decided to visit after a trip to the see the big cats down at Ceder Cove in Louisburg. Little place off of the side of strip mall. Nothing fancy. Signs indicated they had recently added a drive thru. We ordered ribs, brisket, sausage, fries and beans. Service was very speedy, as we had our food in less than 10 minutes. Everything was very good. I would not say anything was the best I had ever had, but each individual item would hold its own against any of the well known bbq joints in KC. Price wise, they are cheaper than most any other bbq place in town. Using a deal saver coupon, I actually felt bad, and that I had definitely not paid my fair share. $13 for what should have been $23, and would have cost $30 pretty much any where else. Also, a person, guy, I'm guessing to be the owner made the rounds regularly around the place, and was on top of everything to make sure it was done just right, and that customers were well taken care of. 50 miles from my house, but I will be back for sure. Good stuff.

Awesome. Small and locally owned with nice people and great food. Loved it and portions were generous to share. The quality of the meat was good and fries were also great. We will absolutely be back!

Worst barbecue ever..... burnt ends were dry and un edible. chicken tasted old and like it had been reheated numerous times and was so dry. this is one barbecue restaurant we will never go back to. $3.50 for 6 small onion rings. baked beans tasted like propane and was super salty.

  • Rich T.

Really good, big ribs. The sauce is really good too. Jason, the owner, is doing a great job. I'll make this one of my must-visit rib joints when I come to KC.

    (4)
  • Bill W.

Everything we tried was either really good or great - brisket, pulled pork, burnt ends and especially the ribs. I loved the fries, slaw, beans and potato salad too. Sauces are tasty as well. Best of all this is a local family business that cares about what they serve.

    (5)
  • Brad B.

Only stopped in for a take out of a slab of ribs ......biggest meatiest ribs I ever had!! The sauce is a solid tomato based sauce.....a little on the bland side for my taste. Service was fine..they did give me about double my order as it was the end Of the night and I imagine they had a drawer full of meat left. Need to go back and try some other items. A lot of competition out there and the location is a bit tough...hope they make it it.

  • Kathy R.

A small restaurant but held our large group with room to spare. We all ordered different things and no one was disappointed. Their meats and sides are great. The owners have been there each time we have gone and go out of there way to be sure we have everything we need. One of the best BBQ restaurants in the area and we haven't been back to another one since we discovered it.

  • Philip R.

Possibly the best brisket sandwich In KC. They need to serve it on white bread though... (i mean the location IS in 'white-bread' South O-Pee after all!!). With a side of their home smoked beans, it's a great meal under $10. Ribs & burnt ends are way above average, too. Friendly Owner & staff, combined with lightning fast service and drive-up window(??), all in all, definitely worth a try. A bonus for me is I live close by, but it's worth a drive if you don't.

  • T s.

New place...excellent food. For sandwiches they toast the bun slightly...great touch. Beans are as good as anywhere in the metro. Fries fresh. Staff goes out of way to accommodate. This place, and Brobecks are the best bbq places!

My name is Patrick Keenan and tonight was my second takeout experience. The first time I had the BBQ Turkey sandwich and fries which were GREAT! Tonight was my second visit and I ordered half slap of ribs with fries and mushrooms! The service again was excellent, the ribs (they gave me a double order) were so meaty I did not even come close to finishing! I am definitely going back to try other items 0n there menu. I'm not one to write a review, but this is one restaurant that I would strongly recommend.

Was visiting Kansas City and heard a lot about the barbeque. All the places we had had recommended were closed on Sundays, but we found this great little gem. Really tasty food! We got the Boulevard Fries and the half slab rib dinner, and everything was really tasty. The ribs were probably the best I've had anywhere: really meaty, fall off the bone tender, and spiced well; and the prices were really cheap! PLUS open on Sundays.

Smokeys has great food and service. I recommend the burnt ends. Food comes out quick and delicious. The owners are very friendly and nice.

I've been to Smokey's several times. Ribs, pulled pork, brisket ... So far, they know how to prepare / smoke every type of meat. I continue to tell everyone about it, and all have come back with amazing comments on how good the meals are.

    (5)
  • Ken J.

Great place that is a hidden gem due to it's location. I have had the Boulevard sandwich 3 times and have been pleased every time. While I may like some other token KC BBQ places better, I would recommend giving it a try if you are in the area.

    (4)
  • Jeanne K.

By far the best ribs I've had in KC. They were meaty, moist and smoked just right. The BBQ sauce is just right for my tastes, I'll bet their beans are great. They also have a hot and extra hot sauce I only tried hot and it was! The sweet potato fries were damn good. On the menu, they have BBQ spaghetti which will be on my next trip. Smokeys is tastefully decorated, and the place, including the restrooms are very clean. Highly recommended!

  • Carrie M.

Really good bbq! The brisket is great, the turkey is spot-on, and the staff are super friendly! Everytime I've been here is been consistently good and the guys are always nice, so I don't know where these "rude" comments are coming from. This is definitely a keeper!

Tried Smokey's on the recommendation of someone at a business meeting who gave it two thumbs up. Smokey's is a great little, independent BBQ shop. The owner explained (as he took our order) that he developed a lot of the recipes because he is diabetic and needed good food that conformed to his needs. But you wouldn't think "diabetic food" once you sink your teeth into the brisket sandwich. It is very good, and a co-worker had the Boulevard Sandwich and said it was excellent. I thought the fries were good. They were thick cut (not wedges) instead of the skinny fries so many places have switched to. My co-worker said the baked beans were really good as well. The BBQ eggrolls on the menu were intriguing, but we decided to wait for another day to try them. This is definitely on my list of great BBQ places in the area!

    (4)
  • Michael O.

Flavor of meat was fine but pulled pork portion size was small for the price. Onion rings were heavy battered and greasy. Potato salad tasted like it came from the grocery store. No complaints with brisket sandwich but overall an unhappy dining experience for the two of us.

  • Chris S.

Are you kidding me? Can BBQ get any better than what I've eaten here? I've had the Boulevard sandwich three times here. The word-of-mouth advertising for this sandwich is something else. Prior to going here, I heard 3 different people talk about how this is the best sandwich they've ever had. Seriously? In BBQ-laden KC people, including myself, are very hesitant to claim any BBQ is the "best". Everyone has their favorites, but we are reticent to claim the title of "best". This sandwich will slap your palate silly and tell you to stop messing around with other "BBQ" places. The BBQ eggrolls are out of this world, the beans are 2nd to none, and the service is terrific. Everyone that works here takes pride in what they make. Good luck getting that at most restaurants in JoCo, let alone anywhere. I give it 6 yelp stars. Don't wait to go, lunch time is right around the corner.

Prices on yelp n @ the store r different! They r higher at the store! The cashier could be more polite!! He rushes u to make a decision

Great food and customer service! Had the pork sandwhich with fries and it was delicious. BBQ sauces are great as well, and they offer a variety of choices. Not too expensive for how much food you get. Will definatly be going here again soon.

Excellent BBQ!! It is now our favorite and we have eaten at many, many BBQ places in town. The staff is always friendly, the restaurant is always clean, and the food quality is consistently great. We love the original BBQ sauce, we ask for extra if carrying out. The Boulevard Fries are so delish!!

    (5)
  • Chris D.

BBQ quality is top notch. Notables and hi-lites include bbq eggrolls, bbq spaghetti, cheesy tater bake and an amazing sugar free white bbq sauce. Dad & son the place, and service is always A+. Family friendly, open Sundays (!), good cold beer in the fridge. My own smoker has essentially been taken out of commission since we discovered Smokey's.

  • Mike B.

OK I will start with a rant...two one star reviews from people with the same last initial, and it's the only reviews they have both ever written...things that make you go hmmmmm! The ribs were good, the size of the slab was unbelievable, easily feed two. Wife had the burnt ends and cheesy potatoes, she liked them both. Biggest opportunity was the temperature in the restaurant, to be fair it was a 100 outside, but it was a little warm inside, good place will be back.

    (4)
  • Sarah H.

The owner dislikes Yelp for a valid reason if in fact what he said was true, but was nice enough to honor my Yelp check in. Those ribs were the best I ever had and unlike most BBQ I've had he gives you a rather large portion. It took me two meals to finish his half rack. I had the sides of cheesey potatoes which had chunks of ham and potato salad which was a bit too mustsrdy or vinegary for me. On top of great food and sizeable portions. Its at a wonderful price. I'd definitely come back.

  • Keith O.

I judge Kansas City bbq by burnt ends, I will not be revisiting this "bbq" establishment. I am not sure which was worse, the dry hard to chew burnt ends or the rude staff. This is among the worst bbq I have had in Kansas City.

    (1)
  • Becca H.

Great service; good selection; awesome food...and a surprise at the end of your meal! Highly recommend Smokey's. It was our first time here but we'll be back for sure!!

  • Gregory Z.

Some of the pulled pork I have had in a long time! Very moist and beautifully smoked. The pork was tucked between a NIC small sub roll that didn't get in the way of the meaty goodness inside. Topped with two small onion rings the Boulevard could hold its own with any of the major BBQs in KC. On request, the owner made us two brisket filled egg rolls that were incredible! I may never eat a cabbage filled roll again!

I went here on Saturday to try it out because I was in the mood for something new and this place was close to where I was shopping. I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. One thing I noticed was the lack of trophies and ribbons which kind of surprised me but Jason (owner and chef) explained that he had a couple of them but he didn't want to bring them into the restaurant for display to get all dirty. I can understand that, but I also appreciated the fact that I was not confronted with a barrage of boasting and bragging in the decor. There is nothing I can't stand more than a BBQ joint that displays ribbons and trophies from over a few years ago and expects to impress someone that grew up in a family thats competed in BBQ competitions for many years. Jason was really awesome to talk to about things and when I asked him questions or debated whether one BBQ joint was better than another he simply won me over by starting off with "BBQ is always subjective, but in my opinion..." That in and of itself told me that he knows what he likes and makes it, but also respects others product. Another thing that really impressed me was that the other owner of this place is a diabetic and finding sauce that he can eat is hard. So what did Jason do...he created a cream based BBQ sauce that actually tasted pretty good. It comes on the BLVD Fries which are really tasty by the way. Just knowing that he did that made everything that much better, but also added to how passionate he is about BBQ. Now on to the food. We ordered a whole slab of ribs, burnt ends, blvd. fries, cheesy potato bake, and BBQ beans. I was very satisfied by the quality of food this place produced. The ribs had some good bark on them, the burnt ends were tender and delicious although next time I will order them without sauce so I can taste them more, blvd. fries were great, cheesy potato bake was really good and it reminded me of hash brown casserole, and the beans were good. Im a big fan of Oklahoma Joes BBQ Beans so the beans here were good, but certainly not better than Oklahoma Joes in my opinion. Something that really surprised me was that Jason brought out samples of something new he was working on to let us try. I don't want to say what it was because I am not sure if its on the menu yet or not. I would recommend this BBQ joint for place to go to that is priced well, serves quality food, but overall benefits a Father/Son ownership that has a deep passion for BBQ. If you stop by make sure to talk to Jason about his story and how much work he does to create the items on his menu its really interesting to hear.

The blvd sandwich is just as good, if not better than joes zman. Hidden gem of KC bbq.

I love BBQ and my parents have been here a hand full of times so I thought I would try it as well. I was HIGHLY disappointed. My favorite thing at most BBQ places are burnt ends. I had such high hopes but they were awful! They were so dry and hard to chew. I was there at lunch time and expected the food would still have some sort of moisture in the meat. Nope. I was wrong. I am kind of a BBQ snob after living in Texas for the first half of my life and then in KC for the other half. I don't think I will every get burnt ends again. Maybe try some other meat next time...

I was tempted to visit here after an article in the Star about the barbeque spaghetti. It piqued my interest enough to get me to make the trip way out south. And, I wasn't disappointed. The spaghetti comes smothered in beans, sauce and your choice of meat, with a pickle. I chose the brisket, which was very tender and sliced extremely thin, more like what you would see on a deli sandwich. The dish was very good and I would highly recommend it if you're looking for something a little different at a barbeque joint. One of my companions had the brisket sandwich with the spicy fries. He confirmed the brisket was delicious on the sandwich as well. My other friend had a rack of ribs and enjoyed them a great deal. The dining room was small and clean, and the service was friendly. We ordered and paid at the counter, and then someone brought our food to the table. Just another of those delicious little barbeque places that seem to spring up like weeds in Kansas City.

First time customer. Owner and staff were awesome and friendly. Place was clean and food was great! I've had BBQ from places in FL, TN, NC, GA, MO and TX. This place is just as good as some of the best I've been to. Good location. Definitely worth a visit!

This place is a hidden gem. 5 visits to smokeys and all have been very good. The owner is very friendly and service is fast and personal. This joint can hang with all the big names in town on quality, flavor , consistency and outpaces on service and price. Also they have brought back brownies! Meat not dessert. The blvd and ribs and burnt ends and spaghetti and fries and onion rings are all great. Visit and enjoy

Tried their bbq for the first time tonight. 2 meat combo sandwich. Huge sandwich for the money. The sausage was a bit on the spicy side but very good. The brisket was smoked very well and just melts in your mouth. I will definitely be going back.

I moved to Overland Park a year ago and all we heard about was one BBQ place being the best. I won't name that place but I am going to step forward here and claim that Smokey's BBQ should be right at the top of the best list. I ordered the brisket and burnt ends and let me be clear here, both rocked my taste buds. I can't wait to try their ribs. The menu is very diverse and they even have what looks to be a good kids menu. If you haven't tried Smokey's you should.

My family loves coming here. It's a very friendly and layed back atmosphere. The owner takes real pride in his food. We tried the place because of one of the online deals (maybe dealsaver?). I don't really remember. Since then I have ate here at least a dozen times, mostly take out. It's close to my home so very convenient. The ribs are nice and meaty. They have always been juicy and delicious. Also well priced. The Boulevard sandwich is a great quick pick up for dinner. The mac and cheese is nothing real great. Try the potato bake. It's amazing. My daughter can't get enough of it. The beans are also very good. If you want to give yourself a heart attack, try the boulevard fries. Probably would make great appetizer for a big group. Almost too much for one person to handle.

Wow--we can't say enough good things about this place. Easy location at 143rd and Metcalf tucked into the back side of the strip mall. We haven't dined in yet, but have called in and picked up our dinner several times and have never been disappointed. In a city of great bbq, this local establishment is definitely a contender. We ordered the ribs and a couple of sides (beans and breaded mushrooms) one night, & picked it up in the drive-thru. The ribs were delicious--tender with the perfect amount of sauce. Breaded mushrooms were the best we've had in town as of late, and the beans were great too. We've also gotten the pulled pork sandwiches, brisket, the homemade mac & cheese (yum), and the fries. All good. We're really hoping word of mouth will help them be successful in the neighborhood. The workers there have always been friendly, and since it seems to be a family-run business, it'd be great to help them build a loyal customer base.

I'm new to the area so I was driving down the road and turned into the location to turn around and looked over and saw the place so I decided this is where id grab a quick dinner to go , I walked in and was greeted instantly Great customer service and friendly, I looked over the menu and decided on the Burnt Ends Dinner ......I got it home and it smelled great and the presentation was good as well I tried the mac n cheese I got for the side and it was really good most places ive gotten mac n cheese from are usually to creamy or really think this was perfect and had good flavor Homade is what I got, the burnt ends were tender and had excellent flavor the rib was good as well perfect portion not too much but not too little it hit the spot I will be going back for sure , id recommend to try it if you never have two thumbs up five stars.

tried lunch here today, saw the place out of the corner of my eye and as i love to try new BBQ places, this was as good as any. i had a lunch special beef sandwich and beans as a side the beef was sliced super thin and its a good thing it was smothered in sauce, because it was super duper dry. one of the reasons why i prefer the thicker sliced meats is because i don't think it dries out as quick. good thing the sauce was tasty. i tried the "hot" sauce and it was indeed "hot". i liked them both. the beans were smokey and sweet with chunks of meat and very good. for 8 bucks it was an awesome deal for lunch, and i will return to try their other options. the place is on the east side of metcalf in case you're looking.
